Eric D. Barton

Eric D. Barton, a partner, has a broad trial and litigation practice that includes the areas of medical malpractice, business litigation, antitrust, intellectual property, and product liability. He practices in state and federal courts in Missouri and Kansas and works with local counsel in many other jurisdictions around the country. He has tried numerous cases successfully to juries in complex cases with substantial damages claims.

In addition to an active docket of cases in many courts in Kansas and Missouri, Eric is currently representing clients in an antitrust case, In re Potash Litigation, MDL No. 1996, consolidated in the Northern District of Illinois, and he is representing clients in product liability matters in Madison County, Illinois and Orange County, Texas. In addition, he has experience in patent infringement litigation in multiple jurisdictions, and he is representing the State of Kansas in a contract dispute between the states and the major tobacco companies relating to payments under the 1998 settlement.

Eric earned his law degree from the University of Kansas, where he was a Rice Scholar, Order of the Coif, a note and comment editor of the Law Review, moot court competitor, and where he received a faculty award for outstanding achievement. Eric then served judicial clerkships for Judge Stephen Anderson of the U.S. Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and for Justice Fred Six of the Kansas Supreme Court before entering private practice. Eric has taught legal research and writing and trial advocacy at the University of Kansas School of Law, and he appears occasionally as a contributing writer in the Manhattan Mercury newspaper.

Eric serves on the board of the Lawyers Association of Kansas City (LAKC) and has spoken frequently at continuing legal education seminars. He and his wife, Jennifer, co-chaired the 25th Annual Valentine Gala, a fundraiser for Sunflower House, a non-profit child abuse prevention center. They have two children and live in Lawrence, Kansas.
