Joan Toomey

Joan practices in the commercial litigation area. Her practice has particular emphasis in the area of managing and performing document review and coding work associated with large-case document discovery and production, with an eye toward efficiency and cost-effectiveness for the client. She has experience and familiarity with software tools commonly used for electronic document management in large document cases, as well as with practical and strategic considerations for data and document management in document-intensive cases.

Among other projects, Joan has assisted in the Firm’s representation of the State of Kansas in a contract dispute with major tobacco companies relating to payments under the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement, in a class action suit alleging antitrust violations among private equity firms, and in mass tort cases including cases alleging injurious exposures to toxic substances over an extended period of time.

Upon graduation from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law, Joan joined Lathrop & Gage L.C. and practiced in the commercial litigation department representing the Resolution Trust Corporation and various local companies in breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty claims. She took some time away from the practice of law to focus on raising her two children, during which time she was active in volunteer work in the community, including volunteering for her children’s schools and fund-raising for various local charities, such as The Children’s Place, Children’s TLC, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and MOCSA.

Joan is licensed to practice law in Missouri and Kansas. She is a member of the Missouri and Kansas Bar Associations.
