Tom L. Wagstaff is a partner with Wagstaff & Cartmell whose practice includes both plaintiff and defense civil litigation cases, focusing primarily in the areas of professional malpractice, nursing home malpractice, medical malpractice, products liability, personal injury and wrongful death litigation.
Tom was honored in May 2007 by the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association with the prestigious Thomas J. Conway Award, which is given annually to one, younger trial lawyer who exemplifies two traits of the late Tom Conway: (1) outstanding trial skills and (2) the ability to be a fierce advocate and a good friend to opposing counsel at the same time.
Tom was also recently selected by his peers for inclusion on the list of Missouri & Kansas Rising Stars for 2008.
Tom is licensed in Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas, and he has handled cases in each of those states, as well as in Texas, North Carolina and South Carolina with local counsel in those states.
Tom Wagstaff was born on June 13, 1973 in Kansas City, Missouri. He attended public schools in the Shawnee Mission School District, graduating from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1991. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in English in 1995 from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. He then attended the University of Kansas School of Law in Lawrence, Kansas where he received his law degree in 1998. Tom began working for Wagstaff & Cartmell as an attorney in 1998 following his graduation from law school.
While in law school, Tom married Carrie Sullivan, whom he had originally met while in college. Tom also served as a law clerk for Bartimus, Kavanaugh, Frickleton & Presley (which today is Bartimus, Frickleton, Robertson & Gorny, PC) and Wagstaff & Cartmell, LLP.
Tom is an active member of the American Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association where he chairs the medical-legal/nursing home sub-committee, the Kansas Bar Assocation, the Sports Lawyers Association, and the Ross T. Roberts Inn of Court. Tom also currently serves as a board member for St. Luke's Hospital of Kansas City, the St. Luke's Cancer Institute, and The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City.
In his spare time, Tom likes to spend time with Carrie and their three children, Will, Regan, and Owen. He also enjoys jogging, horseback riding and traveling.
