Thomas P. Cartmell
Tom Cartmell is a founding partner of Wagstaff & Cartmell LLP. He started the firm with Tom Wagstaff in 1997 after practicing with the Kansas City firm of Blackwell Sanders Matheny Weary & Lombardi. Tom received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Kansas in 1990. He graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1994. While in law school, he was an editor on the Kansas Law Review.
Tom was the 2001 recipient of the Thomas J. Conway Award, an award presented annually by the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association to a young trial lawyer who represents his/her clients with zeal. In 2003, Tom was awarded the Lon O. Hocker Memorial Trial Lawyer Award, an award presented annually by the Missouri Bar Association to an outstanding trial lawyer in Kansas City. He was recently appointed by Governor Holden to the Missouri Commission on Patient Safety, a commission created to help improve health care in Missouri and further reduce medical malpractice claims. Tom is a member of the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association, the Johnson County Bar Association, the Kansas Bar Association, and the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association.
Tom practices primarily in the areas of professional malpractice, products liability litigation including mass tort litigation, commercial litigation and personal injury litigation. He is a frequent speaker at seminars which focus on discovery and trial strategy, malpractice litigation and nursing home litigation.
Tom is also active in the community and currently is a member of the board of trustees for the Ozanam Home for Boys and the executive board for Crittenton Behavior Health. He also serves as municipal judge for the city of Mission Hills, Kansas. He is married to Shelley; they have two children, Trent and Quinci.
